Originally released in 1969 Phallus Dei is the classic and incredible debut by Krautrock legends Amon Düül II, post the splitting of the original Amon Düül commune. Impossible to describe, Phallus Dei is a complex conglomeration of psychedelic rock, jazzy, folk-inspired, fuzzed out, organized chaos. Their most 60s sounding recording retains all it’s magic in this present day, not sounding a bit dated. Accessible and intriguing, Phallus Dei is a good place to start for the uninitiated and also serves as the ultimate re-issue of one of the best in a handful of the finest in the Krautraock genre.
First released in 1970, Yeti was the second album by Amon Düül II and is quite a musical achievement. Originally released as a double vinyl album set and now re-mastered onto a single CD, Yeti contains some of Amon Düül's most impressive work, delivering their thick, full-fledged, multi-layered sound with dense instrumentation and a certain epic vastness... in many ways not unlike the craftmanship of early Can. This is Krautrock in the full mass of its power: huge, towering, dark and completely devoid of any happy optimism but still bound full of energy. Instrumentally, Yeti is an album of pure magic with some great psychy, sitarish, acoustic guitar plucking and hand percussion interplay. Yeti is also abundant in the fusion of electric guitar, bass and drum interplay and is totally devoted to improvisation and stands up as some of the most intriguing music you will ever hear. The first three Amon Düül II albums are essential artifacts of the psych/prog era.
1997 reissue on the Repertoire of 1969 debut album from the German prog rock outfit. Six tracks, including 'Kaskados Minnelied', 'Mama Duul Und Ihre Sauerkrautband Spielt Auf' and 'Im Garten Sandosa'. The album was first released on the Metronome label.
The fifth Amon Düül II studio album, Wolf City, saw the light of day in September of 1972. While its predecessor, Carnival In Babylon, had, according to Karrer, still been produced "with revolvers drawn", the recordings of Wolf City went off comparably peacefully. The same applied to the musical direction of the album, which sounded more song-oriented, not as multi-layered and more geared to Renate Knaup's unusual vocal style. Even the sweeping improvisations of earlier days were a thing of the past, with only the seven-minute opener Surrounded By The Stars coming close to the playing time of their previous cuts. Atmospheric numbers such as Wie Der Wind Am Ende Einer Straße or the brief, avant-garde Deutsch Nepal were definite highlights of Amon Düül II's creative oeuvre. |
